Black Au: Living Compost

The finished result of nature’s regenerative power

Aerobic Compost System

Black Au is our premium, mature living compost — carefully crafted through the complete three-phase aerobic composting process. Packed with stable organic matter, diverse beneficial microbes, and exceptional biological activity, it doesn’t just feed plants — it awakens and rebuilds the living soil ecosystem beneath them.

Whether you’re a home gardener, professional landscaper, or working on larger regenerative projects, Black Au can deliver real, long-term fertility and resilience.

What Makes Black Au Different

Not all compost is created equal.

Black Au is the result of a complete, carefully managed thermophilic aerobic composting process — designed to produce a truly living, biologically rich soil amendment that goes far beyond basic nutrition.

Key Differentiators:

  • Full Three-Phase Transformation: Unlike many basic or cold composting methods, Black Au goes through the complete aerobic cycle — mesophilic, thermophilic, and full maturation. This ensures maximum breakdown of materials and development of stable, long-lasting humus.
  • Self-Generated Biological Heat: Our process reaches high thermophilic temperatures naturally through microbial activity alone. This powerful self-heating phase creates cleaner, safer compost while preserving and enhancing beneficial biology.
  • Mature & Stable Organic Matter: The extended maturation phase produces highly stable humus that acts as a natural buffer — protecting your soil from nutrient shocks and supporting consistent, long-term fertility.
  • Exceptional Microbial Life: Black Au is alive with diverse beneficial microbes, mycorrhizal fungi, and supports the rhizophagy cycle — enabling plant roots to actively partner with soil life for better nutrient uptake and resilience.

Sustainable Measures Taken

Proper Aeration

We regularly turn our compost piles to ensure consistent oxygen flow. This promotes strong aerobic conditions throughout all three phases, accelerates decomposition, prevents unpleasant odors, and supports the thriving microbial life that defines living compost.

Temperature Management

Our system relies entirely on self-generated heat produced by microbial activity. By carefully managing the thermophilic phase (typically 130°F–160°F / 55–71°C), we create conditions that effectively kill most pathogens and weed seeds while preserving beneficial biology — resulting in cleaner, safer, and more lively compost.

Balanced Carbon-to-Nitrogen Ratio

We maintain an ideal C:N ratio that supports the thermo and meso-philic phases by thoughtfully mixing carbon-rich “browns” and nitrogen-rich “greens.” This balance fuels efficient decomposition and supports the full spectrum of microbial activity across all phases.

Moisture Control

We carefully maintain the compost pile at the ideal level of moisture — like a wrung-out sponge — never too wet, never too dry. This delicate balance is the lifeblood of the entire living process. It creates the perfect environment where billions of beneficial microbes can flourish and work at their peak, driving the powerful transformation from waste into vibrant, nutrient-rich compost.

Too little moisture starves the microbial community. Too much water chokes it, leading to anaerobic conditions and lost potential. By honoring this critical balance with attentive stewardship, we ensure every batch of Black Au reaches its fullest regenerative power

Particle Size & Diverse Materials

By shredding materials to increase surface area and incorporating a wide variety of organic inputs, we accelerate breakdown and create a rich, balanced nutrient profile in the final compost — supporting both immediate fertility and long-term soil health.

Avoiding Contaminants

We strictly avoid adding materials containing synthetic chemicals, pesticides, or herbicides. This protects the beneficial microbes, mycorrhizal networks, and overall biological integrity that make Black Au truly regenerative.

Environmentally Conscious Stewardship

Every decision in our process — from aeration to maturation — is guided by a deep respect for natural systems. The result is not just compost, but a living soil amendment that builds natural capital, supports ecosystem services, and contributes to genuine regeneration.

How to Use Black Au

As a Soil Amendment (Most Popular Method)

  • New Gardens & Raised Beds: Mix 1–2 inches of Black Au into the top 4–6 inches of soil before planting.
  • Established Gardens: Top-dress with ½ inch around plants and gently rake into the surface.
  • Lawns: Apply ¼–½ inch as a top-dressing in spring or fall, then water in well.
  • Trees & Shrubs: Mix into the backfill soil when planting (20–30% by volume).

Brewing a Living Compost Tea/Extract (Highly Recommended)

One of the most powerful ways to use Black Au is brewing a living compost tea that delivers beneficial microbes and biological intelligence directly to your plants and soil.

Simple Brewing Instructions

What You’ll Need:

  • Black Au (8–12 fluid ounces per 5 gallons of water, or one full sack for larger batches - e.g. 55-gallon drums)
  • A breathable mesh bag, cheesecloth, old stocking, or painter’s strainer
  • A container (5-gallon bucket or larger)

Steps:

  1. Place the Black Au in the mesh bag and submerge it in the water.
  2. Allow it to steep for 24–48 hours. For best results, gently aerate the mixture using an aquarium pump, or dunk the content like you would a cup of tea — this increases oxygen and helps beneficial microbes multiply rapidly.
  3. The water will turn a beautiful golden-brown color when ready — a sign that the living biology has been activated.

How to apply:

  • Use undiluted or dilute 1:1 to 1:4 with water.
  • Apply as a soil drench or foliar spray.
  • Use it just as you would normally water your garden beds, lawn, trees, or containers.

Reuse Tip:

You can reuse the same Black Au for a second or even third batch until the water no longer turns golden-brown. When finished, apply the remaining Black Au directly into your soil as a powerful amendment.

For New Plantings & Restoration

  • When planting trees, shrubs, or perennials, mix Black Au into the backfill soil (20–30% by volume).
  • Ideal for ecological restoration projects, rain gardens, and urban tree planting programs.

In Containers & Raised Beds

  • Use as 10–20% of your potting mix for containers.
  • Excellent for herbs, vegetables, and houseplants — promotes strong roots and reduces watering frequency.

Pro Tips for Best Results:

  • Always moisten Black Au before applying — it helps activate the biology.
  • Combine with mulch for even better moisture retention.
  • Reapply everyday, if you'd like, for ongoing soil regeneration.
  • Store in a cool, shaded area to keep the microbes active and prevent it drying out.

Black Au works best when used consistently — think of it as building a living foundation for your soil rather than a one-time fertilizer.

Real Impact

Black Au is more than a soil amendment — it’s a piece of the larger solution.

Every bag you use contributes to meaningful, real-world regeneration. Whether applied in home gardens, professional landscapes, or large-scale projects, Black Au supports:

  • Ecological Restoration — Helping revive degraded soils and rebuild resilient ecosystems.
  • Green Infrastructure — Enhancing rain gardens, bioswales, and urban tree plantings that manage stormwater and cool cities.
  • Carbon Sequestration — Supporting the soil’s natural ability to store carbon through stable humus and thriving microbial networks.
  • Broader Environmental Benefits — Improving biodiversity, protecting waterways, and building healthier communities from the ground up.

When you choose Black Au, you’re not just improving your soil — you’re participating in a regenerative cycle that benefits the land, the Bay, and future generations.
